{"id":2048,"date":"2018-01-22T10:08:24","date_gmt":"2018-01-22T18:08:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/phcprimarycare.org\/?p=2048"},"modified":"2017-12-18T10:09:44","modified_gmt":"2017-12-18T18:09:44","slug":"an-ounce-of-prevention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/phcprimarycare.org\/?p=2048","title":{"rendered":"An Ounce of Prevention"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It has been predicted that the 2017-2018 influenza season may be severe.\u00a0 It is starting early \u2013 having shown up in Southern California earlier than usual.\u00a0 It causes or is a part of the cause of death in thousands of people in the US every year \u2013 mostly small children\/ babies and the elderly.\u00a0 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has published guidance for preventing seasonal influenza in the workplace.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Promote influenza vaccine: \u201cThe single best way to protect against the flu is to get vaccinated each year.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 There are several types of vaccine that can be used depending on your particular health situation.\u00a0 It is recommended for everyone 6 months and older.\u00a0\u00a0 Otherwise there are few people for whom the vaccine is not appropriate.\u00a0 Vaccination during preganancy can help protect your newborn who is particularly at risk if the baby catches influenza.\n<ul>\n<li>Unfortunately, as the vaccines are prepared early in the year in anticipation of the major predicted strains of influenza in the fall, this year the vaccine was off the target from the prevalent strain causing influenza this year. However, protection against the 2 or 3 other strains involved in causing influenza remains.\u00a0\u00a0 It is still highly recommended.\u00a0 I got mine \u2013 even during the fires!<\/li>\n<li>The influenza vaccine is given at a time of the year when common colds show up in the population (kids back in school) \u2013 so many people have said they thought that the vaccination gave them the illness. THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Hygiene\n<ul>\n<li>We have become familiar with cover your cough (either with your elbow or a tissue) and dispose of the tissue properly \u2013 stand away \u2013 it doesn\u2019t take much distance to reduce exposure.<\/li>\n<li>Wash your hands &#8211; transmission from hands can be prevented by washing. I do frequently during the day and when I arrive home from work.\u00a0 Don\u2019t be nuts about it but have common sense.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Know the signs and symptoms of influenza \u2013 influenza is NOT the common cold (people do come to work with colds \u2013 kinda unavoidable and a nuisance). \u00a0I consider influenza with the following symptoms that can often develop quickly:\n<ul>\n<li>Fever \u2013 almost always (or chills)<\/li>\n<li>Cough \u2013 influenza is a respiratory illness<\/li>\n<li>Body aches \u2013 yeah, this is part of the misery \u2013 ache all over<\/li>\n<li>Headache \u2013 another typical part of the misery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So you can see how influenza is different from the run of the mill cold or stomach ailment.\u00a0 You can have sniffles, sore throat, stomach complaints, fatigue too, but I pay attention to the top four.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you think you have influenza \u2013 GO HOME &#8211; STAY HOME\u2013 WATCH NETFLIX! (although you may want only to sleep) \u2013 Check in with your health care provider if you are at high risk or take a turn for the worse. \u00a0\u00a0Don\u2019t be a part of the spread of influenza in the workplace.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I practice these measures for five reasons<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I don\u2019t want to get sick \u2013 influenza \u2013 not the common cold \u2013 is miserable<\/li>\n<li>I don\u2019t want to use my valuable PTO time being ill! (hmm vacation or home feeling like I\u2019ve been run over)<\/li>\n<li>I don\u2019t want to bring it home to my family (what a way to spoil the holidays and new year \u2013 and they will get mad at you)<\/li>\n<li>I don\u2019t want to bring it to work \u2013 \u201cIT WAS YOU!\u201d<\/li>\n<li>AND I\u2019m a doctor \u2013 walk the walk \u2013 I\u2019m a believer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you have influenza \u2013 stay home, rest, take fluids, medications like ibuprofen to feel better (don\u2019t give aspirin to kids or adolescents).\u00a0 If you worsen seek medical advice or help.\u00a0\u00a0 Don\u2019t return to work until your fever is gone for 24 hours \u2013 you\u2019ll know, the relief is remarkable.<\/p>\n<p>Vaccine, cover, wash, recognize, stay home.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It has been predicted that the 2017-2018 influenza season may be severe.\u00a0 It is starting early \u2013 having shown up in Southern California earlier than usual.\u00a0 It causes or is a part of the cause of death in thousands of &hellip;
